WEEE registration cost in Germany: every stiftung ear fee, with a worked example

Updated 7 October 20266 min readSellers budgeting for a German WEEE registration

The authority's fees for a German WEEE registration are low and public. stiftung ear charges **EUR 9.50** to grant a registration per producer, brand and equipment type, and a **quarterly fee of EUR 32.80** per registration number for every started calendar quarter. A seller that has to appoint an authorised representative pays **EUR 50.60** once for the confirmation of that appointment. These amounts are set in the fee ordinance (ElektroGBattDGGebV). The larger costs are usually the ones the ordinance does not set: the representative's own fee, the financing guarantee, and the disposal itself.

The stiftung ear fees, item by item

The fee items are listed in the annex to the ElektroGBattDGGebV. The table shows the items that can arise for an ElektroG registration, with their number in the annex.

No.What it is forFee
1.1Granting a registration, per producer, brand and equipment type (or per authorised representative, represented producer, brand and equipment type)EUR 9.50
1.2Quarterly fee per registration number, per started calendar quarterEUR 32.80
1.4Review of a producer's individual guarantee in principle, per guarantee submittedEUR 156.90
1.5Review of the guarantee amount, per equipment type and started calendar year, per reviewEUR 3.80
1.6Review of the substantiation of exclusively professional use and the take-back concept, per registrationEUR 18.90
1.7Confirmation of the appointment of an authorised representative, or of a change to the mandateEUR 50.60
1.8Confirmation of the end of an authorised representative's mandateEUR 12.60
1.10Change of the registered equipment type, per changeEUR 20.50

The table reflects the version of the ordinance last amended by an act of 30 September 2025. The amounts are adjusted regularly, so the current annex on gesetze-im-internet.de is always the authority.

Filing outside the ear-Portal costs extra

The ordinance adds a surcharge for applications not filed electronically through the ear-Portal, between EUR 35.50 and EUR 320.20 depending on the procedure. Filing through the portal avoids it.

Worked example: one brand, one equipment type

A store with no establishment in Germany sells one equipment type under one brand to private households and registers through an authorised representative. The authority's fees in the first full year are:

ItemAmount
Confirmation of the authorised representative (once)EUR 50.60
Granting the registration (once)EUR 9.50
Quarterly fee, four quartersEUR 131.20
Review of the guarantee amount for the calendar yearEUR 3.80
Total in the first full yearEUR 195.10

The quarterly fee is charged for every started calendar quarter, so a registration granted in March pays the first quarter in full. In later years this example leaves the quarterly fee and the annual review of the guarantee amount, EUR 135.00 together. Each further brand or equipment type is a further registration under item 1.1.

The costs the fee ordinance does not cover

The authority's fees are the smaller part. Four items are purely commercial and can only be settled by getting quotes:

  • The authorised representative's fee. A seller with no German establishment has to appoint one under § 8(2) ElektroG. The law sets no price and the market range is wide. Our guide to the WEEE authorized representative covers what the role includes.
  • The insolvency-proof guarantee. For equipment that can be used in private households, § 7 ElektroG requires an annual guarantee for the financing of take-back and disposal. Most small producers join a guarantee system, which charges its own contributions.
  • The disposal itself. stiftung ear assigns producers the collection of full containers from municipal collection points. The producer pays for collection and treatment, usually through a disposal service provider.
  • The running work. Quantities for household equipment are reported monthly, by the 15th of the following month, under § 27 ElektroG. Someone has to work out the weights per equipment type.

Package prices only compare if the contents are listed

Offers such as "WEEE registration from EUR X" include, depending on the provider, the authority's fees, the representative's fee, the guarantee and the quantity reports, or only some of them. Ask which of the items in this guide are included before putting two quotes side by side.

What it costs not to register

§ 45 ElektroG treats failing to register or registering late, placing unregistered equipment on the market, and offering it for sale as administrative offences. Paragraph 2 sets a fine of up to EUR 100,000 for them. In practice something else usually comes first: § 6(2) bars distributors, marketplaces and fulfilment providers from offering, listing or shipping the equipment of an unregistered producer, so the listing is blocked before any fine notice arrives.

How long registration takes

stiftung ear states that a complete and correct application usually takes two to four weeks, and that high application volumes and complex cases can take longer. A foreign seller first needs the appointment of its authorised representative confirmed. Selling is allowed only once the registration order has been issued. The sequence is set out in our guide to WEEE registration in Germany for foreign sellers.

  • Count brands and equipment types: each combination is one registration at EUR 9.50
  • Budget the quarterly fee of EUR 32.80 per registration number as a running cost
  • With no German establishment, add EUR 50.60 for the confirmation of the authorised representative
  • For household equipment, get a quote for the guarantee and for disposal
  • For package offers, get in writing which items are included
  • File through the ear-Portal to avoid the surcharge

How Assuro helps

Assuro connects to your Shopify store and shows which products are electrical equipment and which equipment type they fall into, which tells you how many registrations you need before you ask for a quote. It keeps your registration numbers and reporting deadlines on record. Assuro does not register you, act as your authorised representative, or issue any certificate.
