How to add a Responsible Person to your Shopify product page

GPSR says EU shoppers must see your EU Responsible Person's name, address, and contact on the product offer before they buy. In Shopify you can do this three ways: in the product description, with structured metafields, or with an app. Metafields are the clean option, because the same block then shows on every product automatically.

What the law asks you to show

For a product whose manufacturer is not in the EU, the offer the shopper sees has to carry your Responsible Person's details. In practice that means, on the product page itself:

  • the Responsible Person's name,
  • a postal address in the EU,
  • an electronic contact such as an email or a contact form,
  • ideally in the language of the country you are selling to.

Option 1: the product description

The quickest fix is to paste the Responsible Person block into each product's description. It works and needs no theme changes. The catch is that you repeat it by hand on every product, it is easy to forget on new ones, and it is not structured data you can reuse. Fine for five products, miserable for five hundred.

Option 2: product metafields, the clean way

A metafield is a structured custom field on a product. You define the Responsible Person fields once, fill them per product or in bulk, and edit your theme so the product template renders them in a consistent block. The steps in Shopify:

  1. In your admin, go to Settings, then Custom data, then Products.
  2. Add metafield definitions, for example responsible person name, address, and email.
  3. Fill the values on your products, one by one or with a bulk edit.
  4. In your theme editor, add those fields to the product template so they appear on every product page.

Shopify also supports metaobjects for richer compliance blocks, and several GPSR apps will render the details for you if you would rather not touch theme code.

Option 3: let Assuro write the fields for you

Doing this by hand across a large catalogue is the part most sellers dread. Assuro connects to your store, and once you define your Responsible Person a single time, it writes the GPSR fields, the responsible person, manufacturer, and safety information, straight into your Shopify product metafields, with definitions so they show up in the product editor. You get a preview and a one-click undo before anything goes live, and it never touches your titles, images, or prices.

Do not stop at the Responsible Person

Showing the Responsible Person is one requirement of GPSR. You still need correct labelling and basic safety documentation, and if your products ship in packaging or contain batteries you also owe EPR. The full picture is in our EU Responsible Person guide.

  • Decide how you will display the Responsible Person: description, metafields, or an app
  • Show the name, EU address, and a contact on every product page
  • Use the language of the country you sell to where you can
  • Make it apply to new products automatically, not from memory
  • Check the rest of GPSR and EPR while you are in there

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly does the Responsible Person need to appear?

On the offer the consumer sees before buying, which in practice is the product page. Showing it there, alongside the product information, is the safest reading of the rule.

Can I just put it on one page or in my footer?

That is risky. The requirement points to the offer for each product, so a single buried page may not be enough. Showing the details on each product page is safer.

Do I need a different Responsible Person for each country?

For GPSR, usually no. One EU Responsible Person can normally cover the whole EU. EPR is different and often needs a representative per country.

Does Assuro act as my Responsible Person?

No. Assuro displays and tracks the data and can write it into your Shopify product pages, but you still appoint the Responsible Person. We organize and flag; we do not certify or act as your representative.
